New in MacChess 3.0 Rotterdam 12/8/96
First, a special "thank you" to Richard A. Fowell.
He helped test MacChess 3.0 and proofread my English.
Special thanks also to Morten Larsen for testing MacChess 3.0 and to
everyone that gave me support and advice by sending me postcards and email.
====== NEW FEATURES ======
1. PowerPC native - MUCH faster (and much stronger) on Power Macintoshes.
2. Special "Easy" levels for learners to play against.
3. "Next Best Move" option for getting the second best move.
4. A "Log" option to record MacChess's analysis during a game.
5. An Analysis mode for running a set of EPD test positions in "batch" mode.
6. Updates the nodes and nod/sec information more frequently.
====== FIXED PROBLEMS ======
1. The "Sliding Pieces" and "Notation" preferences are now saved properly.
====== PPC NATIVE ======
MacChess is now PowerPC native, with the chess engine hand-coded in PPC
assembly language. MacChess now runs about 13 times faster on a "stock"
6100/66, and twice as fast as it ran on a 6100/66 with Speed Doubler.
Also, there's no need to buy Speed Doubler to improve MacChess's performance
on Power Macintoshes. This increased speed makes MacChess much stronger.
However, MacChess 3.0 runs only on Power Macintosh computers and won't
run on 68K systems. Because MacChess is hand-coded in assembly language,
I can't maintain two parallel versions. If you don't have a Power Macintosh,
use the last 68K version of MacChess (MacChess 2.5.1).
====== EASY LEVELS ======
There are now 6 "easy" levels, for people who find MacChess is too tough
an opponent. Those levels use no extensions at all,
and MacChess does not look very far ahead.
Easy Random: Random moves for fun.
Easy Easy: MacChess thinks a Queen is worth the same as a Knight or Bishop.
Easy 1: 2 ply deep (one move by each side)
Easy 2: 3 ply deep.
Easy 3: 4 ply deep.
Easy 4: 5 ply deep.
====== NEXT BEST MOVE ======
This lets you see what MacChess thinks is the "second best" move.
MacChess repeats its analysis, excluding the move it had chosen as best.
It only excludes one move, so if this command is used repeatedly,
it alternates between the "best" and "second best" moves.
====== LOG FILE ======
This option saves MacChess's search output during a game to a log file.
This is a convenient way of seeing what MacChess thought you should
play when reviewing a game afterwards.
====== ANALYZE EPD POSITIONS ======
MacChess will now analyze every position in a .epd file with one or more
EPD positions. This is a much easier way to have MacChess analyze
a position (or series of positions) than before, since no index file is
required, and all the problems can be kept in a single file.
====== NODE AND NOD/SEC UPDATE======
The "nodes" and the "nod/sec" outputs update more frequently
(after approximately 500 K nodes - every 10 seconds or less).
A "node" is a possible future position.
====== FEATURES IN WORK ======
Analyzing an imported game for white or black.
Analyzing and showing the main line in the "player vs player" setting.
Improved playing strength.
